Stay : Trollstigen carpark, WC, cafe and shop plus viewing point 62.4527 7.6639
Another rainy night and grey start to the day. Knowing that the weather forcast was for clearing skies this afternoon, we decided that a drive along the E136 through the Rauma Valley would be a good way to spend the morning. We were not disappointed, although the cloud hung to the tops of the mountains we could still experience the beautiful valley with mountains on either side of the road as we followed alongside the Rauma River and the Railway. This area is called Trollveggen after a mountain that has the tallest, vertical rock face in Europe. There were many waterfalls but a few outshined the rest.
At the Slettafossen rest area (62.32504, 8.07781) there was plenty of parking, picnic tables, a shop and many viewing points to witness the water rush through a 30-40m high gorge. It was quite spectacular.
We also turned off the road to see the traditional water mill at Sagelva, but unfortunately it is only opened on weekends.
From here we continued on for a couple more kilometres to a lovely picnic spot on the river (62.2703, 8.16348).
We then doubled back stopping briefly at the Trollveggen visitors centre.
We then turned off onto the 63 to Trollstigen. We popped in at the Trollshop to have a quick look.
Trollstigen is a famous drive with 11 hairpin turns up to the top where there is a big carpark, WC, a cafe and souvenir shop. There is a short walk from the carpark to a viewing platform offering fantastic views of the road, waterfalls, the valley to Andalsnes and the surrounding peaks. We spent the rest of the afternoon here enjoying the views and watching the cars, motorhomes, buses, motorbikes and cyclists negotiate passing each other going up and down the road.
What an amazing road ! Tthe weather is having fun with you as well.
