Mark and I (Mireille) are from Melbourne and have always dreamed of motorhoming around Europe at a leisurely pace and to be able to visit and experience all aspects of life there.
We have been fortunate to have travelled in the past and have visited Europe, Asia and South America. In Australia we have enjoyed lots of experiences bush camping and caravanning. We have also motorhomed in New Zealand a couple of times. We love the old towns and enjoy exploring historical buildings of every kind. Mark is a builder and appreciates the architecture and workmanship required to create these beautiful buildings. We are looking forward to walking in the Alps and along the rugged coasts, taking in all those breath taking picture perfect postcard views.
I still have family in both France and Switzerland and we are looking forward to seeing them again and hope to find out about my family history, as well as Mark's family from England, Ireland and Sweden.
We have never been into planning a trip with every minute scheduled but we realized a 7 month trip needs some preparation. We are lucky that we have been able to retire and have the time to do what must be done! The most difficult thing is leaving our family. Life is too short and we must take the opportunities when they arise. So here we go....
Our first journey in 2013 we travelled mainly through France as we waited for Mark's visa to be finalized. Starting in the Cote d'Azure we experienced the Mediterranean, the Dordogne, Provence and the Pyrenees. We briefly visited a friend in Spain and caught up with our son in Barcelona. Then we made our way into Northern Italy for repairs on Bluey. After experiencing the Tour de France we ventured into Switzerland, via the French Alps, to catch up with family. Then back into France we went exploring Alsace and following the battlefields into Belgium then to Normandy. From here we explored Brittany and visited more family. On our way to Paris we saw the castles in the Loire Valley. And so the motorhoming bug has bitten and plans for 2014 began.
We started 2014 with more repairs to Bluey and then headed to the west coast of France and continued south into Northern Spain and Portugal. After enjoying the food and wine we went to explore the Pyrenees before meeting up with some Aussie friends for a couple of weeks visiting the French Alps together. We then made our way into Northern Italy - Dolomites, Tuscany, Venice and the lakes district. From here we drove through Austria and into Germany to enjoy the fun at Oktoberfest in Munich and then the beautiful Black Forest. As we made our way back to Paris we visited Champagne and Lorraine.
In 2015 we headed back to Italy - Cinque Terre, Rome, Pompeii, Lecci. Then we took the ferry from Bari to Dubrovnik, Croatia. We ventured to Kotor, Montenegro and Mostar, Bosnia then continued north through Croatia into Slovenia and Austria. After Vienna we visited Bratislavia, Slovakia and Prague, Czech Republic. We stopped in Dresden before staying in Berlin for 3 days. We made our way to Cologne then through Holland into Belgium, visiting Ghent and a few battlefields. Then back into France to spend a weekend in Paris with our family before taking the Eurostar to London for 2 weeks without Bluey. We finished off the trip visiting family in Brittany and going through the Loir area.
Last minute changes were made in 2016 and so we began our journey in April as we needed to be back in Australia for the birth of our first grandchild. Due to the colder weather we decided to head south to Spain visiting Madrid then southern Portugal before meeting up with Tom and Kristy in Seville. We then spent a day in Gibralta and then made our way to Granada, Sierra Nevada and along the Costa Blanca coast. We then ventured inland through Andorra and back into France. From here we travelled towards Switzerland where we explored some new parts and visited family before spending a few hours in Liechtenstein. Then through Austria we drove into Germany along the Romantic Road to Ulm. We then followed the Rhine to Amsterdam, Holland. We drove back through Belgium into northern France visiting a few new villages before heading back home.
2017 was going to be our shortest time away so far as lots was happening at home and we wanted to be back for our grandson's first birthday. We were excited as this year we were heading to Nordkap, Norway and we were to travel through some new countries. Due to snow not having melted yet, we decided to go anti-clockwise. So after once again, picking up Bluey from just outside of Paris, we set off through Belgium and Germany. Then into Poland where we stopped to visit Lodz, Warsaw and The Wolf's Lair before driving to Lithuania. Here we saw Trakai, Vilnius and the Hill of Crosses. Riga, Latvia was next, along with a stop at Gauja National Park. We visited Parnu and Tallinn in Estonia before taking the ferry across to Helsinki, Finland. We visited villages along our journey northwards including Santa's village at Rovaniemi. Then through Norway we travelled in snow and blizzards reaching Nordkap at the end of May. We could now take our time exploring the beautiful Fjords of Norway and their islands, driving along the many National Tourist Routes. There was so many highlights and breath taking scenery, it was truly amazing. We ended our visit of Norway in Oslo before driving to Stockholm, Sweden. After 6 days in southern Sweden we took the ferry to Helsingborg, Denmark and then went to Copenhagen and Roskilde. Then through Germany and Belgium we travelled to get to France to take our flight back to Melbourne.
In 2018 and we did our 6th trip! Who would have thought... This year we spent some time in France visiting family and exploring some new places, we met up with our son and his family for a 5 week motorhome adventure together. We then all met up with our daughter and her partner in Budapest for a few days. The last 8 weeks we ventured on our own. We clocked up a total of 19 countries and travelled 16,000 km over 113 days visiting France, Switzerland, Germany, Czech, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Liechtenstein, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia.
2019 saw us going over the channel to England for a few weeks. We then travelled for 6 weeks around Scotland including a trip to the Orkney Islands and the Outer Hebrides (Lewis and Harris) before touring for another 6 weeks around the green isle of Ireland and Northern Ireland. We ended our 4 months with a few more weeks in France.
During 2020 and 2021 the world dealt with Covid-19 with many lockdowns and travel restrictions. We did manage a couple of caravan trips: in 2020 we ventured to the most North West section of New South Wales for a month and in 2021 we travelled across the Nullarbor into Western Australia making it to Perth and back in 80 days.
Finally in 2022 we set off again to Europe and a long waited reunion with Bluey for 3 months travelling in France to Brittany, down the west side into Northern Spain to enjoy the Picos Europa, tapas and rioja wine. We tried to escape the heat, heading back into France via the Pyrenees. We then explored the Provence area before making our way briefly into Italy. From here we went to visit family in Switzerland. We enjoyed some time in Germany and stopped for a day in Luxembourg before returning to France.
