Journey to Alta

Travelled : 199km
Stay: Alta - free parking near small marina and fish drying racks.  69.9868 23.3059

Before we left Havoysund we went to use the free service point behind the Statoil service station (70.99487 24.67244). There were 2 motorhomes parked here plugged into electricity and the sign said parking was payable at the hotel.

As we crossed over the bridge out of town we noticed the Hurtigruten coming in to dock. Then off we went over the snowy pass and along the winding road along the Artic Ocean that hugs the slate cliffs.

These M spots indicate a shoulder you can use for passing traffic.

We passed once again the maze at Selvika with toilet (70.91453 24.60998). We then stopped in Snefjord to take a photo of the cubed seats facing in all directions so that whatever the weather you can find a seat to protect you from the elements.

Fishing rules for the lake.

Lillefjord was our last stop along this National Tourist Route. The toilet here also had water and 2 power points! (70.69445 24.67663). We were lucky that the sun was shining, so we ventured over the bridge and up the path to the pretty waterfall.

We continued on the 889 until Olderfjord and then turned onto the E6 the main Norway highway.

Not far down the road we noticed a motorhome in the ditch and stuck in the snow. We stopped to see if everyone was alright and if they needed any help.  Thankfully the German couple where fine but the kitchen drawers where not. Even though it was a hire vehicle, Mark got out his trusty toolbox and proceeded to fix things a much as possible so they could hopefully continue their holiday. Once that was done we waited until the tow truck pulled them out and they were able to keep driving to Nordkapp. We wish them well.

As for us we went south to Alta. On the way we were amazed at the amount of snow everywhere.  It looked absolutely beautiful.

As we descended from the approx 220m alt. plateau into Alta, on the Altafjorden, the amount of snow lessened but was still visible in parts.

We went to the most northerly lpg gas service station to fill up. Due to the cold we have been putting the heater on everyday, using about 1.7litres a day, to our usual average of 1 litre. The desiel was cheaper here so we filled up on that too. We decided that we had had enough excitement for one day, so we just made our way to our stay for tonight.
