Mefjord, Senja Is Norway

After a short walk to the next beach, we headed in the direction of Husoy Island, a working fishing village. It's only been a few years since the breakwater was built to allow access to the island other than by boat. When we got out of Bluey we were assaulted by the smell of drying fish heads!  Apparently these are exported to Nigera.. 

    

 

 As we walked around the village we noticed many houses with their own drying facilities but they seemed to favour the fillets rather than the heads.

 

We walked out to the little lighthouse which still seems to be working. 

Most houses here also like to have a little light in each of the windows.

The wind must get so bad that the bin enclosures needs to be tied down!

Then it was back on the road continuing on to the next point on the National Tourist Route. The drive to Mefjordvaer was quite spectacular. It was unfortunate that the weather had closed in a bit with the clouds covering the tops of the peaks.

The route is also for cyclists that need to travel through the tunnels. They are obliged to alert motorists that they are going through by pressing the red button.

 

We decided to sit out the rain and once it had stopped we went for a walk through the village and then on one of the few walks offered on the hills behind. The village is more for tourists and holiday makers, with even a big hotel. The wind is calm and the rain has eased and so tomorrow we hope for a lovely sunny day....we shall wait and see.

 

Winds must be really extreme here, they have to lash down the whole house!
