South Bohemia Czech

Travelled: 87km
Visited: Telc, Tabor
Stay:Tabor-free parking at stadium/pool, no facilities 5min walk to town N49.41889 E14.66417

A special thank you to Ewout and Jenny for their blog info, inspiring us to take a detour to see these 2 towns.

After a quiet night we started the day with a walk through Telc. The town square was beautiful with its Italian Renaissance and Baroque buildings, each a different shape and colour. The large arcades were North Italian inspired and made for a very pleasant and cooler visit. We explored a few streets and then found an audioguide that gave us some historical information of the town and castle.

A pendulum clock with rocks as weights ALL made out of wood.

Koala give aways to a lovely swiss family.

Our drive to Tabor was a pleasant one through small country towns and farm land.

We found a parking spot easily enough and then went to the old centre. We decided a beer and some lunch was a good way to start. Goulash and a skewer of mixed grilled meat was the menu for today.

No Mark's beer is not smaller...its just an illusion!

Feeling very satisfied we spent an hour following the free guided tour map (you can also get free audio guides),

The main square and Town Hall in late Gothic style.

A 24 hour clock.

LH side: where we had lunch with copies of late Gothic Hussite Motifs painted on facade. RH side: late Renaissance gable.

skoch House - gothic gable bordered with arches called 'donkey's back'

LH-rococo burgher architecture decorated with stucco in style of Louid XVI with lion on top.
RH-renaissance period with rich graffito decorations

Renaissance style Once owned by a knight family

Ctibor House a late gothic burgher building, gable with tracery decorations

Mixed style Dean Church with colourful pulpit.

A Hussite Warrior

then took a half hour tour of the underground tunnels which were dugout of the rock the town is built on. Throughout the years the tunnels had numerous uses:the constant temperature was great for brewing beer; people lived here after fire destroyed most of the town, waiting for their new homes to be rebuilt; it was also used as prison.

We then finished the map tour

Folk baroque style typical in villages in Southern Bohemia.

Starek House- 1570 decorated with graffito inspired by ancient mythology.

1603 Flemish Renaissance style with highly decorative gable.

Cultural differences!

and went back to Bluey to recover.

After consulting maps etc we decided to stay here the night and make a fresh start tomorrow towards Prague.
