Travelled:85km
Visited:Krems, Vienna
Stay:Kritzendorf-free train station parking incl services. N48.335831 E16.298611
After a very quiet night we continued our way along the Danube stopping in Krems and had a walk around the old town and visited a couple of churches.
We then made our way to Kritzendorf with Camy deciding the quickest route was taking a very small and expensive (€12.70) ferry across the Danube!
We stopped to do a quick shop then got to our spot for tonight. We were surprised to find it not very busy with only 2 other campers. After some lunch we went to find out about the trains into Vienna and were told that until September the trains are replaced with buses. So a bit more complicated but the up side is it may not be so noisy tonight!
As it was only 1:30pm we went to hop on a bus and as we waited a very kind lady said she was going to the same station and that we could travel with her and she would show us the way.
We paid €2.20 ea one way to get into Vienna and then another €2.20 for a one way metro ticket so that we could use our 24h Vienna transport ticket €7.40ea on our return so it would last us all day tomorrow. From the station we only had a short walk to Saint Stephens cathedral in the centre of town. We sat inside while it rained and listened to our audio guide. Mozart was married and also had his 2 children baptised here.
We walked along the very busy shopping strip and main pedestrian area to the Opera. On the way we spotted an Australian bar but we were saving ourselves for the local brew.
The Opera House built in 1869, has had generations of great musicians perform here.
The cafe Sacher made famous for its Sacher Torte chocolate cake.
In Albertinaplatz we fortified ourselves with a bratwurst and beer before continuing on.
We learnt about the Monument Against War which stands on the spot where a WWII bomb struck, burying several hundred people who where in a cellar.
We strolled around and saw some interesting sights of the city:
The Holy Trinity Plague Column.
Many fountains and statues.
Chocolate from Demel.
Mozart's Statue.
