Bratislava Slovakia

Travelled:174km
Visited: Bratislava (Slovakia)
Stay:Trencin-cabin camp, €17 incl use of toilets, showers €.50c extra for electricity N48°53.9994' E18°2.4888'

Before entering Slovakia we bought a €10/10 day vignette for the motorways at the petrol station.
We managed to find a parking spot in Bratislava along side the Danube and in walking distance to the old centre. (N48°8.4054' E17°6.8832') Best to get there before 9am, the earlier the better. Cost €1/hr. Feeling a little unsure if it was ok for motorhomes we asked a few passerbys and a nice young man who works for Tesco confirmed that it was ok.

So off we went in search for the tourist office. We got a map but luckily we had done screen shots on the iPad of a more detail description of the main places of interest from their website. It is the capital city but the main tourist attractions are in the historic centre which is very easily visited.

We saw some quirky things: the Rubberneck man peeking out of the sewer ditch,

Schone Naci a statue of a man who used to entertain the locals,

the Napoleonic soldier leaning against a bench in the main square and the guard.

There were also many other statues and fountains around town.

Beyond the town we could spot the castle on the hill, rebuilt after WWII after 150 years of neglect. It had been part of the Habsburg family (as per Vienna).

We saw St Martin's Cathedral where until 1830 the Hungarian kings were coronated. The copy of the royal crown (300kg) sits on a gilded cushion that is 2m x 2m on top of the 85m tall neo-gothic tower.

The Old Town hall.

Franciscan Church, the oldest Gothic sacral monument. St.Michael's Gate with its copper bulbous roof and on the very top the archangel Michael is slaying a dragon.

St.Clare church.

The National Theatre built in 1888.

 The art deco Blue Church.

There are also numerous museums that can be visited.

We said good bye to the Danube River.

The UFO bridge lookout tower and restaurant.

The mercury was rising so we hopped into Bluey and headed North to Piestany. On the way we stopped to get Bluey's tyre fixed that had a big screw in it that had been making an annoying ticking sound as we drive!

Unfortunately the camp sites in Piestany were not much so instead of sitting around in 40° heat we travelled some more to Trencin, it was not much better but arriving at 5:30pm, we didn't have much choice. The place is a throw back to the communist workers holiday camps! The old town looked nice as we drove past and there is also a castle on  the hill that can be visited.
We did a wash and had a salad for dinner and hope it cools down enough for a reasonable sleep.
