The Bay of Biscay Spain

Travelled:143km
Visited:Getaria, Lekeitio, Gorliz
Stay: Gorliz- large parking area, free, no services GPS N43.41220 W2.94194

Our first stop this morning was in Getaria. A charming trawler port town with lots of restaurants in its narrow cobblestoned streets. We were tempted to stay and wait for lunch for some grilled fish, but as we had only eaten breakfast we decided to continue on and hoped we could get some at another town further on (no such luck). It is also where Juan Sebastian Elcano was born. He led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe completed in 1522 after 3 years and 78,000km. The church has a lovely octagonal clock tower and inside an unusual timber slanting floor.

On the way to our next stop in Lekeitio, we drove along the coast road and up, down and around lush green hills. We even experienced a bit of 'home' with gum tree/eucalypt plantations scattered throughout!

The aire in Lekeitio was quite nice. We had a walk through town to the port area where there where many bars. We of course had to taste the local pintxo and beer.
From here we drove to our final destination for the day, Gorliz. On the way we had a look at the aire in Bermeo. This is a large port town and the aire was a parking area where the locals stored their vans. Not too impressed. So we are quite happy to spend the night in a Gorliz parking area just next to the beach with a well set up promenade along its length and also along the river. Close by there are the obligatory bars and pizza restaurants.
