After a cool and quiet night the bright sunshine this morning promised to develop into a hot summers day. So we didn’t tardy to get in the road to start our explorations for today in Pappenheim. It was a pleasant town to stroll around in and admire the buildings. Once again we have a look in the churches.
The offerings are very secureWe even ventured up to the castle ruins. It was a picturesque road to Neuburg an der Doanau, with many dolomite outcrops to be seen along the way.
We have seen several of these in different formats to notify the town that a baby has been born. Our back roads to Germany book suggested to stop to look at the pilgrimage church (1755) in Bergen. It was a surprise to see such a decorative interior in a tiny sleepy village. We were also able to go down in the crypt which has a well.
We were able to walk into the palace courtyard. On the facade there were biblical scenes done in sgraffito technique (chiseled into the render in 1560).
The Baroque grottoes (1665) were designed with shells.
The palace chapel with some outstanding frescoes (1543) is the oldest Protestant church in the world.
We also liked the Rococo styled library building (1731). The inside of this church was white with lots of gold trimmings. There were several relics (bones of saints).
We descended into the new town and found a traditional Bavarian restaurant for lunch. We were very happy with our beers and sausages, Mark had curry wurst and I had sauerkraut. All was delicious.
As it was another hot afternoon, we found a shady spot near Ingolstadt, close to a lake and the Danube.
On the Danube.
