Cirque de fer à cheval, France

Although the rain had stopped this morning the clouds were still low. We awaited until 7:30am to start  Bluey’s engine to drive through the boom gates to the motrorhome parking P4. There were already a few that had risked staying overnight here. We reversed into our spot and had our breakfast before getting ready for our hike.

We needed to walk 700m from P4 to the start of the walks and to the  Cirque de Le fer à cheval (horseshoe) which was unfortunately still covered by clouds.

We began our hike following Le Giffre River. As we walked the clouds slowly lifted revealing the escarpments that surrounded us below as well as the numerous waterfalls. We crossed several streams, some over small bridges others by rock hopping.

After the Passerelle du Fond de la Combe we climbed up further into the cirque.

We talked to the farmer who had his sheep grazing here and asked him about the blood we had noticed on the trail. He was concerned that it may be wolves attacking his herd, but hoped that it may just a result from a birth. The vistas were beautiful as we looked through the valley and above us. We then descended back on the other side of the river giving us a different view. As we walk back we were happy to be heading back to Bluey as we encountered so many people that were going up.

After some lunch we retraced our track back down into the valley and then across to Bellagarde before turning up towards the Jura mountains.

We found a parking area in the small village of Confort, finding a shady and breezy spot for the rest of the evening.

117km today
