Visited:Seegrotte Hinterbruhl, Vienna Austria

We took the scenic road (avoiding tolls) from Krems to the Seegrotte in Hinterbruhl just south of Vienna.
It used to be a gypsum mine until 1912 when a blast caused 20million litres of water to enter the mine to create Europe’s largest subterranean lake. It wasn’t until the 1930’s that it was rediscovered and opened as a tourist attraction. It was closed during WWII and used as an underground aircraft factory. The tour cost €11/adult. We rugged up as the underground temperature was 9°c.

We walked 400m into the mountain. In the upper floor there were several displays showing us how gypsum was mined from 1848-1912. .
We then took a boat ride on the lake which is 60m below the surface. It has an average depth of 1.2m. Every night 50,000litres of water needs to be pumped out as there is no natural drainage

We then drove to the stellplatz in Vienna and decided to go and spend the rest of the afternoon wondering in the city and have some dinner.
