Stay: Airbnb apartment on Rákóczi út
We had a busy day. We packed our bags this morning in preparation for our Airbnb Budapest stay. Along the way we called into a camp ground which kindly let us dump our toilet for free. Needless to say the buildings were still of the Soviet era, but we were grateful for their hospitality and thanked them with a kangaroo.
We arrived in Budapest in good time and managed to get a parking spot at Brody Sandor utcà 18, 5 mins walk from our apartment and at 3,500huf/€10 per day.
Unfortunately our host was an hour late due to communication problems, but that was soon forgotten once we had settled in.
We then went to find a spot for a late lunch at Grotto Gulyas, which had delicious food. Mark and I both had Goulash that was very tasty.
Feeling fortified we decided to take a stroll towards the Danube and ended up at Parliament House.
We saw the shoes on the banks of the river that are symbols of the people who were killed here.
We caught a tram back and then finished the day at a famous ruin bar Szimpla Kert.We had another fun day in Budapest. We walked down to the three floor neo-classic central market hall. It is famous for selling traditional produce and regional delicacies and langos- a fast food dish made of a fried pizza like dough with fresh toppings.
We then walked across Liberty Bridge and up and down Gellert Hill.
From here we followed the river to the base of Castle Hill funicular. Unfortunately it started to pour rain. We waited it out in a cafe, deciding that we would come back tomorrow and instead go the the ‘House of Terror’ museum. In 1944 this building was the party HQ of the Hungarian Nazis. Then the notorious communist terror organisations AVO and AVH, took up residence here. Many were tortured and killed here. It was quite an intense visit and a very dark part of Hungarian’s history.
After a rest we returned back to the Jewish Quarter for another delicious meal, this time at Koleves.
