We had that rainy day feeling again this morning. We waited it out as long as we could, but after having already been confined to Bluey yesterday afternoon, we lasted until 10am. We were in luck as by this time the clouds had lifted a bit and there was no more rain. We managed to find a parking spot near the pool in Villard de Lans and strolled through the weekly market and little streets with the required clothing and food shops seen in all these ski resort towns.
We then drove through the Gorges de la Bourne, which we could easily state, had the most overhangs on the narrow road. Especially as we were on that side! We had a few 'hold your breath' moments, but Bluey made unscathed.
On the way we took a photo of the impressive 300m Bournillon waterfall.
In Pont en Royans we admired the pretty coloured houses built in the 16th century hanging off the cliff over the river.
The man made pools next to the river where quite a unique design.
From here we drove via the Grand Goulets, through la Chapelle en Vercors to Vassieux en Vercors.
We visited the Nécropole, a cemetry where many were buried from the German attack on 21July 1944. We then drove up to the Resistance Memorial created in 1994 in memory of the tragic events in the Vercors region. There were 840 civilian and military victims who died for the sake of freedom here. From the lookout we viewed the beautiful plateau below surrounded by cliffs. It is said that 'here on this belvedere blows forever the wind of freedom'... and yes the wind was blowing strong and cold! We ventured back down to the aire near the village and after dinner we had a stroll through this simple, quiet and sad place.
