Natzwilller and Mutzig

Travelled: 80km
Stay: Strasbourg - Aire  48.56661, 7.79806

We spent a very emotional morning visiting Struthof, a concentration of Natzweiller. It is the only one in France, however when it was built in WWII, Germany had claimed Alsace and Moselle as a 'state' of Germany. It is horrific what humans can inflict on others and even though it is very confronting we want to take the time to acknowledge the suffering these people endured for the freedom we now have.

We then did a tour of the Mutzig Fort, built by the Germans, when they occupied Alsace, in 1893 to 1918. We only saw 10% of the 628 acres, as the military still use the rest as a training camp. It was an amazing structure, being the first to be built with concrete and its own power stations. Most of the tour lead us through buildings linked by underground galleries and it was very interesting 2 1/2 hours.

The only one left in the world!

The plan of the fort.
Pump room.
Bread oven, in one of the 6 Bakeries.

Dough kneading machine, 300 kg of dough at a time!

The power station.

The hospital.

One of the 18 kitchens.

The toilets!

Uniforms of the day.

Finally out!

Outside defences.

We then headed straight for Strasbourg and we were pleasantly surprised to find a spot in the Aire. We look forward to riding around Strasbourg tomorrow.
