Stay: Kientzheim - parking free 48.13673, 7.28153
Got to Colmar early to ensure we could get a parking spot. We found free street parking one block away from the paid parking areas. We rode into the centre of town and followed the tourist route obtained from the tourism office. This town is a major tourist attraction and the streets were filled with tour groups. We admired the typical Alsatian architecture and soaked up the atmosphere. They even call the small river running through town 'Little Venice' offering boat rides with commentary. We went to have a look at renowned altarpiece, a painting of 'the virgin in the rose bush'. It had been stolen from the church in the 70's but later found and returned.
Our next stop was the quaint little village of Niedermorschwihr (yes quite a mouth full. Luckily we didn't need to ask anyone for directions!) The village boasts to have the only twisted church spire in all of Alsace and the historic houses with bay windows were great.
We then made our way to Kayserberg. The Aire here is huge (7eu/24hrs). We used the services but decided to stop 2km down the road in a small parking area (free and quiet) at Kientzheim ( a small walled town surrounded by vineyards).
We then rode our bikes back to Kayserberg through the vineyards of Alsace. This town is also very popular but smaller than Colmar which we prefer. Again we loved the colourful colombage buildings and cobbled streets. Everyone of them is unique.
