Arc et Senans

Travelled : 58km
Stay: Besançon- free parking and services N47.23702 E6.01644

The weather has finally broken with thunderstorms during the night and light rain for most of the day. After a walk around Salins les Bains we drove out to Arc et Senans to visit the Royal Saltworks. A fascinating UNESCO site built in the mid 1770's designed by a visionary architect Claude Ledoux. Due to the lack of fire wood in Salins les Bains, it was decided that it was easier to transport the saline water 21 km to Arc et Senans as it was situated next to the Chaux Forest. Unfortunately it wasn't very successful and was shut down in 1895. However it's 11 buildings set in a semicircle design leaves a lasting impression and proved to be a very interesting visit. After lunch we made our way the Besançon, however due to the insistent rain we spent the afternoon in the Motorhome.  We look forward to tomorrow to explore this town.
