The Nullarbor Caiguna to Norseman WA

Travelled: 428km  Caiguna, Balladonia, Fraser Range to Norseman free RV park (-32.194929,121.774447)

After a very peaceful night and a sleep in! We drove into the Caiguna Roadhouse, which (as per the others along the Nullarbor) offers fuel, food, toilets, a caravan park, motel accommodation and a golf hole as part of the Nullarbor links …the longest golf course in the world! 18 holes, par 72, over 1,365km! If you want an official certificate you can pay $70, or you can have a hit and a giggle for free, just bring a few clubs and a ball! So we had a hit and didn’t do too well..the course is a bit rough so don’t use your best balls…

From here the ‘90 mile Straight’ to Balladonia is the longest straight stretch of highway in Australia.
Cloudy rainbow..

We stopped at Baxter Rest area to have breakfast and had a look at one of the sink holes that are common in the area along with larger sink holes named as caves..

We topped up with fuel ($1.81) in Balladonia which made the headlines in 1979 when space debris from Skylab landed 40km east on a local Sheep Station.

In the museum there was also some historical information on the Afghan/ camels and the REDeX car race.

Further along was Fraser Range which is surrounded by the worlds largest eucalyptus forest with more than 20 species.
Salmon Gums

We made it to Norseman in the early afternoon. We went to have a hot showers ($2/5min..not as good as Nullarbor roadhouse). We then settled in at the RV park. (We had to move a bit later as a big fifth wheeler decided to park about 1m away from us!).

Norseman is a historic gold mining town. Since the 1890’s when a horse ‘Hardy Norseman’ unearthed a piece of gold-bearing quartz, over 5 million ounces of gold has been taken out of Norseman, making it the second richest goldfield in WA.. it appears the town didn’t prosper much from this, unlike the Victorian gold towns.
