Fitzgerald Bay to Point Gibbon, Eyre Peninsula, SA

Day 16 Travelled: 186km from Fitzgerald Bay, Point Lowly, Whyalla, Cowell to Point Gibbon - Mills Steps Camp $10 pn payable at self registration pay station (cash only) -33.815025, 136.785724

We spent a quiet 2 nights at Fitzgerald Bay. We ventured along the unique shingles dunes. The sunrises were spectacular. Our ‘neighbours’ shared some interesting stories with us.

Then off we went heading south down the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula.
We travelled 11km on a mostly rocky road to Point Lowly where we saw a pod of dolphins enjoying the calm waters.

There are a few fishing shacks around the tip if this small peninsula and a historic lighthouse.

But they seem dwarfed by the Santos refinery.

Our next destination was Whyalla, the regions biggest city. It is well known for its steelworks industry. Mark was able to go to the hospital to get his stitches out. We then went down to the foreshore to walk the unusual but impressively built circular jetty.

Between May-August each year luminescent Australian Giant Cuttlefish (as the name suggests they are some of the largest in the world) converge in these waters.

From Hummock Hill lookout we could gaze over the town, it’s steelworks and the jetty, as well as learn about some history of the place.

Having visited here before we continued on after a quick pit stop to Cowell a small town sitting on Franklin Harbour. A Mecca for fishing as well as oysters that are well known around this coastline..
As you drive into town the silo mural is of a local legend Lionel Deer and one of his camels he has bred over 30 years.

We had a walk up and down the Main Street admiring some of the heritage buildings.

Then it was off the Point Gibbon camping area not far away to choose a spot for tonight.
