Goolwa SA

 4 May 2021 Day 6
Travelled: 145km to Goolwa then Moana
Stay: Moana Beach Tourist Park $40pn drive through site all amenities.

The next morning we continued to Goolwa, a historical port town situated on SA Fleurieu Peninsula. We had a walk around reading a few historical notice boards and enjoyed a pie from the bakery for breakfast.

We then took the bridge over to Hindmarsh Island to the Mouth of the Murray lookout.

Throughout history the mouth has moved by 6-8km but now to maintain its flow and environmental impact on the area  the opening in constantly dredged.

We returned to the mainland and made our way to the Goolwa Barrage, one of five built in the area from 1935 to help reduce salinity levels in the nearby lakes and to stabilise the river level for the upstream irrigation.

We strolled along the top to the lock and enjoyed watching the seals, birds and boats.

We then made our way back out of town through the McLaren Vale wine area (previously visited) and onto Our stay for the next couple of nights at Moana.
We settled in at the caravan park giving the car, van and us a good clean up before taking in the lovely coastline as we promenaded along the path.
