Ulm

Travelled : 93km
Visited/stay: Ulm-free mixed parking, service point water €1/50l N48.40727 E10.00977
It took us no time to get to Ulm as we travelled on the 3 lane freeway that had no speed limit. Bluey even got up to 115kph but the cars were still leaving us in their wake. Ulm, like all european towns has had a long history. Being situated on the Danube River it was a major trading hub. Then fortifications were built for defence. In 1879 Albert Einstein was born here. In 1944  bombing  destroyed most of the historic town but luckily the Munster(Cathedral) remained undamaged. It had been built in 1890 and the spire still remains today the tallest in the world at 161m.  We arrived around 10am and felt lucky to get a shady spot under the trees, as they were a premium on another hot day.
It was an easy half hour walk from here to centre. On the way we popped in to have a look at St.George church.

We then we went to visit the Munster.  After a stroll through we decided that we had to walk up the 768 steps to the lookout at the top of the spire at 143m.  We were rewarded with great views but due to the haze could not see the alpes!

Yep we are going to walk to the top of that spire!

Some unusual carvings on the choir stalls.

Up we go!

A view of the bells

The rest of the Munster below

We are walking up there
Great views

We made it!

The old quarter and the Danube River
That's the very top

Felt a little giddy
Making a commerative coin

We next made our way to the idyllic Fishermen's Quarter situated on the mouth of the river's Blau and Danube.

A few crooked walls!

Here we found a lovely pub just in time lunch.

Prost!

We enjoyed some local fare and felt very satisfied as we continued rather slowly our explorations of the area.
The bed legs at this hotel have been cut so their guests don't roll out of bed!

We walked along the defensive city wall built in1480 and through the Butchers' Tower to the most prominent building here, the opulently painted Town Hall.

We then returned to the river and on our way admired the beautiful roses before going to the the arsenal buildings in the former imperial city. Here we found an unusual fountain of Einstein. Feeling very hot we followed the river back to Bluey and  enjoyed the rest of the evening in the shade.

The Germans love these expedition 4wd Motorhomes..too big for us!
