The Aspe Valley, France

Travelled:96km from Canfranc Estacion
Visited: Gorges l'Enfer, Lescun, Oloron Sainte Marie
Stay: Oloron Ste Marie-aire, free parking, services with jeton GPS N43°11.032' W0°36.511'

Unfortunately clouds was all we could see this morning, so over the Col du Somport we went and into the beautiful Aspe Valley in France.

We stopped to have a look at Fort du Portalet, built in 1870 to guard the border and then was later used as a prison. Just a bit further down the road we were able to find the walking track that took us back towards the fort but on the other side of the river and to the Gorges d'Enfer. Here in the 18th century they carved out the rock to form a path for them to carry out large logs for the sail boat industry. Quite a feat!

Our next destination was Lescun, a charming village and a popular stop for hikers on the GR10 which traverses the Pyrenees. If it wasn't for the clouds we would have been able to see the dramatic mountain scenery.

Oh well...we managed a nice walk around the village before it started raining again, so on the road again to Oloron Sainte Marie. After settling in to our spot in the Aire we went for a walk to the Cathedral. We then went to the junction of the rivers Aspe and Ossau, both different colours.
Walking around town we could smell chocolate from the Lindt factory..mmm, a visit tomorrow I think.
Anyway, on our way back to Bluey we noticed the World Cup match between France and Germany was on, so we decided to watch the rest of the match over a beer and pizza.
