Saint Omer

Travelled : 58km
Stay: Wizernes- carpark at La Coupole V2 Museum  50.70593, 2.24018

We got to St Omer just after 9 and after a visit at the tourist office, we went for a walk around town. We visited the beautiful Cathedral and  the remains of the Abbey.

After doing our washing, we went to visit the Fontinettes vertical hydraulic Boat Lift. It was unfortunately decommissioned in 1967 after 80 years of service. It enabled 300 tones of barges to cross a 13m difference in level in 22 mins between the Aa and Lys canal. This replaced 5 locks which have now been replaced by one huge lock. Did you know that In the 16th century, Leonard de Vinci invented the use of locks.

We then drove to Wizernes to the Coupole V2 museum. As we were too late to start the 2 1/2 hour tour we asked if we could stay in the carpark tonight so we could visit tomorrow.
