Riom & Puy de Dome

Travelled: 205km
Stay: Riom free Aire    45.88737, 3.11239

Set off just before 9am after saying our goodbyes. We needed to be in Riom by midday, do we decided to take the autoroute all the way. As we had taken the same one on Thursday we were prepared for the cost, which is worth the saving on time and tiredness of driving such distances on the smaller roads. We were met by my second cousin, Regis, who had visited us in Australia 5 years ago and his girlfriend. After enjoying a  wonderful home cooked meal, we went to walk up the summit of the Puy de Dome. (Also the name of the region) We walked UP a very steep track for 45mins. Great way to work off lunch! Unfortunately as we reached the top at 1465m alt., it started to rain. Luckily we brought raincoats and there was a delicious hot chocolate served at the bistro. After drying off and re-energised, we braved the rain and walked DOWN the mountain in 25mins! We then stopped in Clermont Ferrand at walked around the old town and saw the Cathedral made from the local volcanic stone. Quite spectacular. After saying our goodbyes we got the last spot in the Aire. Cup of tea and off to bed. (Hope the legs are alright tomorrow).

Puy de Dome is the mountain in the background.
