Las Alpujarras, Sierra Nevada

Travelled : 198km
Visited: Poqueira Valley and Las Alpujarras areas of the Sierra Nevada
Stay: Gador- free parking area, no services N36.9541 W2.49058
From the freeway we could see the snowcapped mountains as we drove South and we were looking forward to our drive in the Sierra Nevada.
We veered off the A348 onto the A4132 and enjoyed the dazzling views all the way to the ocean as we made our way into the Poqueira Valley and to the prettiest villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira.

All had well signed parking areas that Bluey could easily fit in, so we were able to explore all 3. They are similar with their white houses that seemed piled up on each other joined by narrow streets. The buildings were unique with their flat graveled roofs and white eccentric chimneys. The area is also famous for its spring water and many fountains can be found and it is also popular for those wanting to explore the national park but you will need to take a bus.

Rugs they seem to be their local product
Yum not sure if it for show or they use it in their cooking

Mark is doing the imaginary washing! Man if many talents.
We have noticed these exercise areas in most of the towns. Not sure if the locals actually use them.

Before the clouds rolled in we did manage a couple of photos with the lovely snow capped mountains in the background.

In these areas miniature building equipment in necessary.
Our next destination was Trevelez,  the highest town in Spain beneath Mulhacen, the highest mountain. Unfortunately the clouds had come in and we had no view. It is also well known for its cured ham and bus loads of tourists were brought here for this too.

Bluey looks a bit lonely after the market packed up and left!
Up to the lookout..these houses look more authentic aca..ancient
We have noticed that in Spain most doorways have curtains to provide privacy as well as ventilation.
Mark always appreciates good workmanship. Liking these doors for sale.
If you didn't know...in Australia we have the 'big' everything (ie- banana, pineapple, koala, lobster..you get the meaning) so here is Spain's version of the big Jamon!
Oh my...and this was just one shop window!
Good bye Trevelaz.
After exploring most of the town, taking a wrong turn and getting caught in the rain, we set off again towards an aire in Canjayar.
It may have been a pretty town but the flies and the smell from the goat farm put us off so we took off further down the road to Gador. On the way the scenery changed quite dramatically.

Our spot for the night in Gador.
