We woke up to sunny blue skies and drove the 20km or so to Oradour sur Glane. It is here that, on the 10 June 1944, the village was destroyed by the Nazi. Horifically they massacred 642 men, women and children (193). Then they looted and burned the buildings. It was a sad place to visit but it is important to remember. Reflecting on the atrocities of war and hoping we and our children will never have to experience such horrors. With the warmth of the sun on our backs we silently left.
Back in Bluey we decided that we would continue our journey south on the D675.
Along the way we skyped with our daughter Claire and her partner Ash, who were at our nephew Ken's 30th birthday celebration. We were there to sing along and watch him blow out the candles on the cake. Technology is wonderful to keep in contact with our loved ones.
We then travelled through pretty villages and countryside before stopping in Brantome. An attractive town in the Dordogne. After finding a river front spot for Bluey we walked through the park and took in the very photogenic scene of the Benedictine Abbey on the river's edge along with the old stone bridge and pretty mill. The abbey was built in 769 by Charlemagne and the belfry is the oldest in France. We strolled through the narrow streets of the village following points of interest on the map from the tourist office. We then returned to Bluey and enjoyed the sun's rays some more. It's amazing what a little sun can do.
