On our way to Toledo we stopped in Pinto do to the services. It cost a grand total of 5c! Which we had to pay on the credit card as it cost 33c per hour to enter the motorhome parking area. We then had a win on the diesel at 87c at the Leclerc next door! With Bluey full and empty in the right places we continued our journey on the free autovia.
We arrived in the pouring rain and we're waved off at the parking area as it was full and told to go to the football stadium and come back after 4pm. As we had no interest getting wet we waited it out in Bluey and by 4:30pm we returned and parked for the night.

As it had stopped raining we made our way up the 5 levels of escalators to the old town that is sited on a hill above the River Tagus.
Having got a map at the tourist office in the main square we headed towards the cathedral, one of the largest in Christendom.
On our wonderings through the narrow and winding streets there was evidence that this was very much a tourist town with shops selling local specialities including marzipan, as well as the run of the mill stuff.
We passed several churches too that had been mainly built in the 6th century by the Visigoths. On the outskirts of the Jewish Quarter stood the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes that has chains hanging on its outer walls that held Christian captives taken by the last Muslim king of Granada around 1492. They were very high up the wall... Glad we weren't around in those days!
There are also mosques and synagogues, the city was a real melting pot back in the Middle Ages.
Even the Romans had been here having built a fortress on the site of the Alcazar (Charles V's Palace) that now holds the Army Museum. Having enjoyed our explorations we returned to Bluey.

ReplyDeleteBrings back memories of our trip through Spain. It always comforting to remember if you need a suite of armour or perhaps a sword, Toledo the place to go. Doesn't look like the weather has warmed yet ?

We are definately looking forward to some warmer weather. Mark did try on a suit but found it too restricting whilst driving and the sword kept getting in the way. Looking forward to following your trip soon. Cheers M&M
