Madrid Day 2

Visited: Madrid
Stay: as per last night

We spent another pleasant day in Madrid. It is a very nice city to get around and an easy walk from the Palace to Retiro Park on the other side of town. It is clean, spacious and calm and we have really enjoyed our visit here.
Today we again started in Sol Square as we had to find the zero kilometre marker that indicates the centre of Spain's huge road network.

We then had some breakfast and wondered down the streets towards the Royal Palace. It took 17 years to build in the late 1700's and was used up to 1931. We spent a couple of hours with an audio guide learning about the opulence and art work of the time. A pity we couldn't take photos.  We were impressed with the chandeliers and one room was completely covered in porcelain (we have never seen that before).

From here we walked through the Latin Quarter and stopped at a restaurant that is famous for it 32 types of croquettes.  We tried a couple with a beer and continued on our way.

We found a lovely little restaurant and enjoyed a 3 course menu lunch for €10,50 each including a drink!

Well as you can imagine we were feeling very full so we walked to Retiro Park and had a little siesta on a park bench. This once royal garden was only opened to the public in 1869. We made our way to the small lake flanked by a half moon colonnade of which there is a statue of Alfonso XII.  There were many people about enjoying the beautiful day. We decided to call it a day and hopped on the Metro back to Bluey and on the way called into the shopping centre just across the road.

A mobile knife sharpener!
