Chianti region Italy

Travelled:110km
Visited: American War Cemetry, Castellina in Chianti
Stay:Siena Acqua Calda-parking free, no services GPS N43.34168 E11.30512

Berfore we headed off this morning we did a pit stop at the service point we found at the back of the parking area. Then we concentrated on Camy giving us directions out of the city. Finally we were out and decided to follow the signs to Greve in Chianti. Just as we were changing routes we spotted the American War Cemetry and went in the have a look. There are 4,398 headstones and 1,409 names of the missing in action on the tablets. As always the cemetery was very well presented and a reminder of the brave men and women who died to give us our freedom.

We then travelled through some pretty country with its gentle rolling hills with patchwork fields of vineyards and olive groves.

By the time we got to Castellina in Chianti it was lunch time. Knowing the market was in town, we paid our €1/hr for the parking (€12/24hr) and managed to buy a roast chicken and some croquets before it closed.

After lunch we had a walk around the small town, spotting a wedding, strolling down the medieval enclosed walkway and of course tasting some Chianti wines.

We decided to stay closer to Siena tonight for an early start tomorrow.

We drove past Monteriggioni which has a garrison town with 14 towers and 570m of walls.

We decided to continue on to a free parking spot just on the outskirts of Siena.
