Siena Italy

Travelled: 0km
Visited:Siena
Stay:Siena-free parking, no services GPS N43.34168 E11.30512

Another beautiful day in Tuscany. Firstly we moved 500m to another parking spot.

Then we caught the #10 Bus for 4kms into the Siena and proceeded to the Duomo. On the way we took some photos...

We stopped for coffee and a croissant...

We walked through Piazza Il Campo where they have a famous bare back horse races  twice a year.

Mark asked for directions...

We saw the symbol of Siena...

At the Duomo we bought the multi pass for €12 each.We admired the exterior facade of the cathedral..

and entered the amazing cathedral

with its incredible marble intarsia (inlaid) floor...

Every where you looked there was something to see, marble columns,

 Statues,

paintings, wooden choir,

 marble altar

and pulpit

and the library with sensational paintings with gold leaf.

After taking our fill we went to the Duomo museum where we had to wait 45mn for our turn to go up the panoramic view point that was on top of the wall of the cathedral that was never completed due to the black plague in the 1380's. Many monuments were unfinished during this time due to the loss of so many citizens and funds.

We then looked at the museum exhibits before taking a break for lunch.

Then it was off to the Baptistery to admire the font and the frescoed ceilings

before ending our visit in the crypt(no photos). These fully frescoed underground quarters had remained hidden for 7 centuries before being discovered in 1999.   Walking through the streets

we took a wrong turn and ended up at the Basilica Santa Maria which also offered a nice view of the Duomo.

We then walked back through town to the San Francesco church.

We ended the day walking on the walls of the fortress and enjoyed another view of the Duomo.

Then it was on the bus back to Bluey and a refreshing drink!
