Florac and the Gorges of the Tarn

Travelled: 95 km
Stay: Free carpark La Malene   44.30115, 3.32185

Had another day filled with surprises every time we stopped. We headed out along the Corniches des Cevennes, climbing up to 1000m and offering some beautiful views and landscape. The road was originally built by the Romans and we even saw Menhirs prehistoric times. We then explored Florac, a charming town nestled at the foot of rocky cliffs. There is a trail around town and an information centre for the very diverse, Cevennes National Park,(which we unfortunately don't have enough time to explore). We purchased some local produce and set off on the road of the Gorges du Tarn. Along the way we passed medieval villages and chateaux clinging to canyon walls. We stopped at St. Enimie, classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France, and it was. Walked around the narrow stone streets, admiring the stone cottages and reading the history on panels. Further along the road we came to another similar village, La Malene, which had a large parking area along the river suitable to stay overnight. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the village and walked up the hill to the Madonna and were rewarded a great view of the village. There is opportunity to do canoeing or take a gondola type boat to see the gorges down stream. Quite an eventful day.

C
an anyone see the face?
