Stanley Tasmania

After our failed attempt at seeing the fairy penguins come up the beach last night (it was getting too late for the kids), we went to the Observation Point in Burnie. Here they have helped with establishing a rockery with lots of man made nests and tunnels. They even had camera footage of 3 nests to watch the ferry penguins. We managed to find a couple which thrilled the kids.

We got some cheap fuel  ($1.97) near Somerset and then continued on all the way to Stanley.
Not sure if the windy conditions deterred other campers but the very popular campsite ($10) at the golf club had heaps of room.
After lunch we walked through the picturesque town (1km) to the base of the nut, essentially the stump of an old volcano.

Some of us took the chairlift ($19 return) whilst the others took the steep zig zag path to the top at 152m high.

The 2 Km circuit around the top offered some amazing views. It is also home to a muttonbird colony.

Someone did a great effort walking all the way around but needed a bit of a rest…
Surprisingly we walked through a forest as well and we’re lucky to see a pademelon.
Then further along we got to lookout on the otherside of the nut.
Then some of us took the chairlift back down....

The walk down was a bit easier.
We had a refreshing drink at the pub. Then back to camp for dinner. Then a walk along the beach.
