Ben Lomond National Park Tasmania

It was to Ben Lomond National Park today.

As we woke up to foggy weather we had time to have a walk around the picturesque northern midlands town of Evandale (not far from Launceston). It had some well preserved Georgian style heritage buildings.

There were 3 bronze statues:

John Glover, an artist.

A Victoria Cross recipient.

A penny farthing due to the town hosting a national championship every February (17th in 2024).

The pub looked like it had some real character too.

There are two St.Andrews churches opposite each other. Pity they were not open to look inside.

The fog started lifting so off we went to Ben Lomond National Park. This imposing massif has an alpine plateau that offers winter skiing.

We drove through some beautiful countryside and then into the national park forest until we reached the hairpin bends known as Jacob’s Ladder to get us up to the plateau. The scenery turned dramatic with cliffs of dolerite rock columns and scree slopes all around us.

We put Buster into 4 wheel drive and climbed up easily to the top with thankfully no traffic coming down.

We went out to the look out at the top.

We stopped in the ski village, which is closed, and had a look around.

We followed a track up to the Legges Tor summit (1572m alt).

We took our time and explored the huts along the way.

The rock scramble in the end was worth the amazing views.

Now it was time for the descent! Buster encountered one car on a hairpin bend but other than that it was a smooth ride down.

We found a spot from the 6 available, in the only campsite in the park.

Starlink even worked under the trees.
