GeevestonTasmania

The cool change has come at a good time as we head to far south Tasmania. We check out the fuel app and make our way to fill up in Brighton. We then drive over the Derwent River at Bridgewater and top to read the info about the bridge. This is the 4th version built in 1946. There is currently a new version being built along side it that won’t need a lift span to allow for naval traffic. Mark also scored some fresh cherries.

As the iron man challenge was on in the main streets of Hobart, we detoured over via West Hobart to avoid the traffic jams. The bonus were views of the river and city below. Mt.Wellington was not a consideration in this weather. We couldn’t even see the mountain top due to the low clouds.

Mark’s maternal ancestors - DeLittle immigrated from Dublin in 1830 on the Cleopatra. Some had lived in South Hobart, so we drove along Davey and Adelaide Streets where they had been. We even chatted to a lovely couple who were working in their garden. He is the 3rd generation of his family to live in their house.

We travel through the rain up to a pub stay in Longley, to find out it’s fully booked and there will be 650 people listening to the Angels play today.
So southwards we travel along the Huon River past many apple orchards. We stop in Geeveston, the gateway to the Hartz National Park in the middle of timber country. This is evident in the numerous wooden sculptures around the town.

The information centre also has a wonderful exhibit of the area and wood making tools.

We find a spot at the RV camp ($10pn) provided by the  RSL, next to the Kermandie River and hope to catch the sighting of a platypus later this evening…
Nice local brew
Pizza dinner
Platypus hunt was successful!

About 100km today..
