Mount Field NP Tasmania

Mount Field National Park offers a wide range of walks through varied landscapes.

After doing a load of washing and paying for our site ($16 unpowered) for tonight, we headed up to Lake Dobson in the alpine area. Buster drove along a windy and narrow track through a succession of forest types.

We began our walk along the shores of the lake under groves of ancient pencil pine.

We have never seen pandani before and it was fascinating to walk amongst them. They are one of the worlds tallest heath. Their tough drooping foliage provides protection from the cold which is needed at this 1000m alt.

We continued on up to the Mawson ski field. The rocky Snow Gum track offered some spectacular views of Lake Seal.

We then strolled along the extensive board walk towards Rodway Hut, stopping just above, to admire the views across the mountains and of some tarns (pools formed by a glacier).

There are various tracks that can be done from here but the 6.5km/3hrs return was enough for us.

View of Lake Dobson and the carpark.

It was a watchful journey back down to camp and managed to come across cars in the wider sections of the road.

After a spell we walked 30mins return from the campsite to the well known Russell Falls. It was a pretty stroll under ferns, giant eucalypts and myrtles.
