Liffey Falls Tasmania

This morning we stopped in the historic town of Westbury. We followed a map around to various buildings that once made this town very much an English style village especially with the village green. The town originally was developed as a military garrison and prisoners were put in stocks on the green! There were steel silhouettes that depicted historical stories of some of the buildings.

At  St.Andrews we learnt about Ellen Nora Payne who made some beautiful wood carvings. We were lucky enough that it was open to have a look.

The Fitzpatrick Inn was the first hotel here.

The Big Wickets were erected in 2009 as a memorial to local cricketer, Jack Badcock, playing for Australia in 1936-38.

The Holy Trinity Catholic Church was another prominent building.

Liffey Falls is a major attraction in the area, so we trundled along narrow and windy roads to the upper carpark. The walking track from here is only 2km return which includes numerous other falls. Once again we ventured under some magnificent giant ferns and tall trees. As it’s summer the falls weren’t  quite as magnificent as the brochure photos but still well worth the effort.

We decided to try our luck at the lower carpark campground and settled in for the night. There is a big group of young back packers… so who knows what the night will bring. The flip side of free camping.

92 Km journey today
