To Yunta and beyond SA

We woke to a windy and blustery day. We took the obligatory border photo and drove along Cockburn’s main thoroughfare.

Then continued on the Barrier Highway taking a few photos along the way.
Very flat landscape but green.

Most buildings in Olary were in ruins.
Even the old railway station was a bit lacking.
We got excited seeing some hills …
This town must have been more important reflecting in a much more impressive station.
Although we weren’t too sure if the hotel was now a museum? It was closed so couldn’t check it out.
We stopped in service town of Yunta, first established in 1887 after the discovery of gold at Teetulpa and Waukaringa. It became a busy railway town during the 1890’s for travellers between Adelaide and Broken Hill.
We filled up with fuel as at $207.9 it will be the cheapest we see for awhile.
It was nice to see a passenger train go past.

We noticed that one of the back tyres pressure was down so we pumped it up and inspected it for a puncture and will keep an eye on it.
We waited out the rain came in with a squall and then decided to head off along Tea Tree Road towards Arkaroola.

35km later we stopped for lunch at the Waukaringa gold mine ruins.
Unfortunately the weather turned nasty on us again so we sat it out before taking the road once again as we decided not to stay here for the night.
Came across 3 road trains and just a few campers going the other way…
These galas didn’t want to get off the road but did manage to take off as we got closer..
The next stop in wikicamps was 160km away at a spot off the road next to the dry Balcoracana Creek. We were surprised with the good conditions of the road as well as about 20km of bitumen along the way. We arrived at 3pm and found our spot for the night. The wind is still gusty so too unpleasant to be outside. This is where we really appreciate having Starlink as there is no Telstra reception. We can do our research for the next few days ahead, do the blog and watch the footy! Happy days expect Essendon didn’t make to the finals…there’s always next year.
