Gammon Ranges Grindells SA

This morning we drove out from Weetootla campsite and back on to Arkaroola Road.

We turned off into Mt McTaggart track towards Grindells Hut and campground. It was a lovely drive with only one time we had to engage 4wd going up a steep hill.
We were very excited to see a Sturt Desert Pea for our first time along the road.
We stopped to walk 1.2km into Weetootla Spring.
It was very picturesque with the red cliffs and white stoned creek bed.

The area around the spring was green and lush.

On the way back we saw lots of emus with their young chicks.

We continued on to Grindell Hut area stopping again to go for a walk. This time it was 2.2km  up to Monarch Mine. It was a copper digging that only operated for 2 years in 1906. Further exploratory diggings in 1917 had poor results. The terrain was quite different but provided some amazing views.

Surprisingly there were plenty of plants flowering.

We finally settled in at camp. Paying our $14 fee via the website…thanks Starlink

Later we went to have a look at the huts. This one is the original hut.

This one is for hire…
This mornings walk to the spring was from T1 to M1. Our second walk was from B5 to M3. We are staying at B6, 17km along Mt McTaggart Track from Arkaroola Road.
