Gammon Ranges Weetootla SA

It was a lovely drive this morning into Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park.

It is a rugged and remote park in the North Flinders Ranges with gorges and tree lined creeks.
We begin our visit at the parks office getting information and maps on the walks available in the area. We book a campsite for the night $14. We then explore the old shearer’s shed.

We make our way to the Weetootla campsite and choose a spot. It’s not busy at the moment with only one other camper here.

After some lunch we ready ourselves for a 8km hike along the Balcanoona Creek into the gorge which offered lots of beautiful scenery.  At the start of the trail there were panels informing us on the various plant species and their use by the traditional Adnyamathanha people.

The brochures also referenced the geology significance of the area. In this part of the ranges magnesite was extracted for use in steelworks. The track was very well signposted directing us across numerous creek crossings.

At the section known as Hells Gate the red weathered cliffs are well displayed.

Shortly after we double back and we explore the other sections of the trail tomorrow.
