Heading South towards the Gawler Ranges SA

It’s another sunny day as we head south down the Stuart Highway… we pass more opal fields and roads that head off to iron mines. The 180km on the bitumen is a bit boring but we chew up the k’s easy enough.
At Bon Bon we decided to take the ‘short cut’ to the Gawler Ranges NP, saving us 250km if we had gone via Port Augusta. At the turn off the sign tells us the road is open. We have also looked at the South Australian Outback Roads Warnings site advising us that we must be cautious of the creek crossings and corrugations.

In Kingoonya we stop for a cuppa. It’s only a small settlement with a pub, caravan park, diesel and a free camp. It was established in 1916 as part of the Trans Australian Railway (travels east west) but links on to the Central Railway/ the Ghan heading North in the next town, Tarcoola.

From here the Gawler Ranges Road is very corrugated and we have to slow down to 10/15 kmph in some sections that seem to last forever. Poor Buster is definitely getting a shake down!

It took us over 2hours to drive the 96km to Skull Camp Tanks Road intersection. We have some lunch (left over pizza) at the old water tanks before tackling the next 50km to our spot tonight. Thank goodness the road conditions are much better with only a few bad sections.

Just after 3pm we call it a day at a lovely spot overlooking one of the many salt lakes in the area.

370km journey today.
