Once again we set off after our morning coffee. We are too early for the purchase of a bread stick before we head into the wilds of the Picos de Europa mountains. But that’s ok as we have heaps of other food to sustain us!
We stop off at the dam wall of the Embalse del Porma (reservoir) and have our cereal, fruit and yogurt for breakfast. Then we follow the road along its banks and admire the beautiful view of the mountains.
The road then takes us over Puerto de Las Senales 1625m altitude (the highest so far for us this year).
Then Puerto de Tarna 1490m which was lovely with the clouds stuck in the next valley.
A little further down the pass we turned off to have a look at Marana (recommended by my Spanish friend, Monica). The 5km drive was lovely, unfortunately on the otherside of the village it was packed with cars and vans for what appears to be a rock climbing event.
So we double back and after a pit stop cuppa in Buron we take a sharp left back towards the National park. The weather is stormy and we have our first bit of rain in Spain. By the time we reach Puerto Panderruedas 1458m we are in the clouds.
In the need of a ‘rest day’ we decide to pull up stumps here. So we have a cooked lunch of Magre de Canard (duck breast) with potatoes and a bottle of Rioja Crianza.
By this time the clouds have dissipated and revealed the majestic mountains surrounding us. The effect is enhanced by the clouds that are still stuck in the valley below essentially making us in between the clouds. After a chat with Elaine and Brian and then Mike and Pam, we venture 10mins through some lovely beech forest up to the Piedrashitas lookout, giving us a closer look at the valley and road below us. It’s a pleasant 14° with a soft breeze.. just perfect. Later in the evening the clouds roll in once again and we are cocooned here for the night.
