Camon, Mirepoix, Fanjeaux to the Midi Canal France

Day 49/France 34
Travelled: 66km from Montbel to Camon, Mirepoix, Fanjeaux and the Midi Canal France
Stay : Écluse de Guerre 43.2892, 2.0179

The sun stayed behind the clouds today and we managed to dodge the few drops of rain as we visited some lovely villages. Along the way we spotted some sculptures and a beautiful treed road.

It is also apple country..
Our first stop was Camon. A fortified village surrounding a Benedict Abbey that had to be rebuilt in 1289 after a dam gave way destroying everything. The village is also known for its 100 roses that adorn the buildings. Unfortunately May is the best time of year to see these in full bloom.

Lucky cat…

A little further on was the bastide town of Mirepoix. The gothic cathedral is the 2nd largest single named church in Europe.

The highlight of the town is the central square  which is surrounded by brightly coloured half timbered buildings and covered walkways.
The most impressive has over 100 carved heads adorning the ancient woodwork.

The covered market hall is made from wrought iron.

Our view was obscured by the huge market in town. But that’s ok as we enjoyed wondering around and bought a roast chicken and potatoes for lunch.

On our way to the Midi Canal, in the heart of the Cathar country was Fanjeaux, a charming medieval village perched on a rocky outcrop. We parked in the aire and strolled into the village where we spotted various sculptures.

Mark was particularly impressed with the covered market hall.

Unfortunately the church was closed.
As we were leaving we spotted some ceramic heads replicas of those in the Consul building in Mirepoix and bought one. She is called the smiling woman.

As we descended into the valley the sunflowers were starting to bloom .

We spent the rest of the afternoon watching some pleasure boats navigate the locks along the Canal du Midi.

Oh and we enjoyed a fruit tart for afternoon tea… all in all another lovely day.
