Cirque de Troumouse Pyrénées France

Day 44, France 29
Travelled: 63km to Luz St Sauveur and Cirque de Troumouse back to Gedre parking (42.7882,0.0199)

The weather report was not meant to be great today, but after a night of rain, the clouds had lifted. We drove up to the service point and then back through town where we bought the obligatory baguette, then headed back down into the valley. The river was nearly overflowing from last nights rain.

At Soulom we took the road to Luz St Sauveur and found a parking spot in the center.

It is in the heart of hilltop villages of the Toy Country and major classified sites. Today we were heading for one of these, the Cirque de Troumouse. We will come back this way to go over the Col de Tourmalet.

We had a walk around and a quick shop before continuing on. Just out of town was Napoleon’s Bridge.

At Gedre the road divides- right to Gavarnie (2014) and left to Troumouse.

It was a narrow switch back road that took us up to the Plateau de Maillet 1800+m alt.

We could not go any further by car/motorhome and had to decide to either walk up 2km or pay €9each for a little train pulled by a tractor up 3km to the Cirque de Troumouse at 2100m alt. Which is 4km in diameter. As there were several walks to explore up there we decided to save our legs and went in the 12noon train.

10 mins later we reached the top and took the track in the direction of Lac des Aires.

The views were awe inspiring.

We continued further on reaching the Caban des Aires before retracing our steps back to the drop off point (7km round trip/2.5hours) for the 3pm trip back down the mountain to Bluey.

One of the many thistles
We decided that we would return back down to Gedre for the night at a lower altitude.
