Travelled: 65km from Roncesvalles via Espinal and Aoiz to Lumbier Gorge, Navarre Spain
We glimpsed griffon vultures flying around.
We exited the gorge through a longer tunnel and continued along the path for a kilometre or so before turning back. On our way we noticed a small track next to the tunnel that took us to the Devils Bridge or what remains of it after it’s destruction during the French Was of Independence.
By the time we got back to Bluey the heat of the day made us search for a shady spot by the river. Lucky enough we managed to find such a place just out of Lumbier…which made for a very relaxing afternoon.
Stay: Lumbier picnic area next to the river and in the shade on a hot sunny day (42.6498, -1.3148)
Then next town, Barguete had a fairly narrow Main Street and made it quite tricky for Bluey when a big truck came up the other way, the water channels lining the road didn’t help either. Dashcam footage to come…
Needless to say we didn’t find parking so we continued on to a similar town, but this time we parked before driving through it. Like the other village, it exists mainly to provide food and accommodation for the Compostela walkers.
Then down the mountain we drove.
As we entered the valley at the foot of the Pyrenees we drove into Aoiz. The motorhome area was a bit out of town so we decided to drive closer in to have a look at the Romanesque bridge. Unfortunately google maps didn’t take Bluey’s size into consideration and we nearly got stuck in a very narrow road.. luckily Marks managed to do some manoeuvring and got us out of there…phew!
Anyway, we did find a spot to park and got some photos of the 4 arched bridge and San Miguel church.
Our next destination was to Lumbier Gorge. We paid €5 to park and set off along the old Irati Rail Trail that linked Pamplona to Sanguesa. After a short walk we enter the gorge through a tunnel.
