With the long weekend looming we thought we would get an early start and explore the Torndirrup National Park. The main attractions are The Gap and Natural Bridge. At the Gap an amazing cantilevered steel platform has been built almost 40m above the ocean so everybody can experience the awe and excitement of dramatic coastal conditions.
The viewing area of the Natural Bridge provides an ability to see the impressive window to the exposed coast.
Just nearby we walked to the Cave Point Lighthouse.
Next was a short walk to the Blowholes. We were lucky to have high ocean swells and get some blowhole action!
At Stony Hill, one of the highest points in the park we could admired the views.
Next we ventured down to the Historic Whaling Station but decided not to visit. It was in operation from 1952 until 1978. During that a total of 1136 humpbacks and 14,695 sperm whales. There used to be a high demand for the oil produced here, employing over 100 staff. The oil was being used by NASA and to make Swiss watches. Luckily today we use synthetic oils and whales are more protected.
We returned to Traky and popped into Albany for water and food. We then drove a short distance to Cosy Corner beach camp and settled into a nice spot, planning to stay for a few days….
