Albany WA

Travelled: 115km to Albany and around…
Stay: Grove Park Golf Links $15pn bush campsite (-35.080131,117.875304)

Had a straight forward drive into Albany early this morning and went straight to the golf course and set up.

After a cuppa we headed back into town found a hot shower at the Surf Life Saving Club and fortified ourselves with a pie from The Royal Patisserie. We were then ready to start our explore. Albany is the largest town on the South Coast and was the first colonial settlement in Western Australia. It still is a busy port.

It was also from here that 41,000 ANZAC troops headed out in 1914 for the battlefields of Europe. For many it was the last bit of Australia that they saw. We visited the National Anzac Centre ($25ea), located within the Princess Royal Fortress (free) and learnt some more of WWI from the personal stories recounted mainly from letters that they wrote back home. We each got a soldier and followed his war journey.

We then did an hour tour of the fortress by a volunteer guide, explaining that it was built to protect intercontinental trade routes. Ships had to stop here to re coal to get to the Eastern States.

There are several gun emplacements…

We then drove up to Mt.Clarence Summit and saw the very impressive Desert Mounted Corps Memorial.

Further on was a steel walkway to Padre White lookout, named after Rector White who is claimed to have performed the first Anzac dawn service in 1930. From here we had 360° views of the town, King George Sound, Emu Point, Oyster Bay and Prince Royal Harbour (the second biggest harbour after Sydney).

We returned back to town and drove through the port area.

We would only have a look at the outside of the Brig Amity replica sailing ship (part of the museum that closes at 4pm!) that brought the first European settlers to WA in the early 1800’s.

We then went in search of an early dinner as we had skipped lunch and eventually decided on a pizza…
