Augusta WA

Travelled: 165Km into Nannup then Augusta
Stay: Augusta - Turner Caravan Park $32 unpowered site

After a very wet night we even had to put the ear plugs in as the rain drops were so noisy! ( the trials and tribulations of caravanning).

As there was still heavy precipitation we made our way to Nannup and decided to do a couple of loads of laundry…not the cheapest at $26 all up but hey it needed to get done.

We enjoyed a breakfast pie from the bakery to warm us up and strolled along the Main Street.

The town has a nice atmosphere and offers plenty of historical information.

There are plenty of walking and biking trails from here but the weather is not conducive to these activities at the moment. As the soggy clouds persisted we finally packed up our clean washing 2 hours later and a camp ground in Augusta was in the cards. It was the 3rd town to be settled in 1830.

Conditions were difficult and it wasn’t until the 1870’s that the timber industry revived the town.

Then the ‘Groupies’ came to settle here after WW1 in the 1920’s. We picked the campground closest to the pub so we can go out and have dinner.

After settling in, we did the fairly short scenic drive to Cape Leeuwin where the Great Southern and Indian Oceans meet. There is also a lovely 39mn lighthouse built from the local limestone in 1896.

We drove along the Skippy Rock Road stopping at various points. The waterwheel was built in 1895 to tap a spring to provide water to the lighthouse workers. It continued operations until 1928 and now stands idle and calcified with limestone..

We finished the route and returned to camp and we finally got to the pub. Cheers.
