Wieliczka Salt Mine Poland

Travelled:37km
Stay:Wieliczka- parking area   49.985050,20.054697
Visited: Krakow, Kusciuszko Fort, Wieliczka Salt Mine

We had a busy day. We started with a walk back into Krakow with our first objective being the trumpet call from St.Mary’s tower in the main square. It is played 4 times every hour from 4 different windows. We then went to have a look at the University building.

From here we found the fire breathing dragon at the base of Wawel castle.

On the way back to Bluey we stopped in at the market and bought 500gm of raspberries for 6zloty/€1.50!  We then decided to drive out to climb Mound Kusciuszko, not to be mistaken with Mt.Kusciuszko in Australia! But named after the same man. We paid 28zloty and enjoyed the view of Krakow.

We then had a look at the exhibitions before driving to Oskar Schindler’s factory.

He employed Jewish prisoners during WWII who subsequently survived the war.
We continued on to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It opened in the 13th C and has produced salt until 2007. It has an extensive and interesting history too much to write here so please look it up. We paid 190zloty incl 10zloty for the camera! Then lined up for the 3pm English tour.

We walked down 350 steps and then walked through various chambers with plenty of salt carved statues and exhibits about the mining methods.

The large chapel with its chandeliers made of salt was a major highlight.

After 2 hours our guide left us and we made our way to the cafe for a quick refreshment.

We then watched a 5D movie on the Mine. We were then taken by a guide for an hour tour of the museum section which showed us a bit more history and mining exhibits.

At the end we took a lift back up to the surface where another souvenir shop greeted us before we exited into the fresh air and sunshine.

By now it was 6:30pm and time for dinner. The kebab shop lured us in, before getting back to Bluey for an early night.
