Painted Monasteries Romania

Travelled:154km
Stay:Humorului- Pensiunea Cristiana Camp 45Ron(€10) N47.6026 E25.8526
Visited:Moldovita and Voronet painted monasteries

We left early to get over Prislop Pass before the Sunday crowds. This proved to be the right decision which made negotiating the unfinished roads without experiencing any traffic jams.

There was no sign at the top of the Pass which was 1416m alt. but there was a lovely church, a cafe and a man selling traditional hats made of goats fur.

From here we made our decent to the pretty Bukovina Valley.

Along the way there were many gypsy camps set up along the river.

Bee wagons

There were a few nice picnic spots along the way

We arrived at the Moldovita Monastery just after 11am and mass was still going with many well dressed parishioners attending. The painted churches of Bucovina have earned UNESCO status. They were mainly built in the 15thC /16thC and their painted walls inside and out feature portraits of saints and prophets, scenes from the life of Jesus, images of angels and demons, and heaven and hell. The murals also represent cycles of religious events.

We paid 5RON ea for the visit and we’re surprised by the nuns handing out food to all as they left after the service.

We then travelled along the valley to Voronet. This was a fortified Monastery built to celebrate a victory against the Turks. There were a lot more people visiting this one along with many shops lining the street to the entrance. The fee was once again 5RON ea.

Having had a few busy days we decided to head to a campsite. We had a cooked lunch and then kept ourselves busy giving Bluey a bit of a cleanup.
