Rothenburg Tauber Germany

Travelled:53km
Stay:Rothenburg - motorhome parking area €12/24hr, service point N49.3704 E10.1834

We drove through some lovely countryside and villages on our way to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is one of Germany’s best preserved medieval walled towns and hence attracts plenty of tourists. Having found a spot in P2, an area reserved for motorhomes, we didn’t have far to walk to one of the many gates to enter the centre.

There was a charming wooden bridge as well as a stone one and we could also explore the inside of the gate house showing how it was used to defend the town against its attackers.

A little further up the road we stopped for lunch before continuing on to Marktplatz where there were some grand halftimbered buildings and a very impressive Rathaus.

We then got tempted to enter the Christmas shop which had an amazing display (and had air conditioning, a relief on the 36° day). We didn’t come out empty handed!

We walked out of another gateway into the Burggarten and admired the views of the town.

We entered St.Jakobs Kirche to have a brief look at the 500yo alter piece and then strolled down to have a look at Klingentor that was built around the 1400 and also served as a water tower. St Wolfgang church was built into the town walls.

At this point there was a stairwell leading to a walkway along the defensive wall which actually looked like it continued all the way back to the gate we came in, but we decided to hop down at one of the towers along the way and return to the main square.

At this point in the day it was very hot, so we decided to head back to Bluey and hopefully return later in the day to explore some more when the weather cooled a bit...it never happened but it doesn’t matter as we had seen the bulk of what there was to see and leaves us with the possibility to discover other things next time.
