Leaving before 7am made for an easy drive to Sibiu town centre.

Arriving at 8:30am we had breakfast and headed into the charming historical centre. This is another town built by the German Saxons during the 12thC. In the 13thC fortifications were built to defend themselves from the invading Tatars(Turkic speaking people from Russia) and later during the 15thC craftsmen formed guilds and the city developed into a prosperous trading centre. We strolled along the main pedestrian boulevard to the Great Square lined with some beautiful buildings including the Council Tower and  Brukenthal Palace.

There were also many restaurants and the kids enjoyed playing in the fountain.

We then went into the Little Square where the most prestigious craftsmen lived.

We walked over the Bridge of Lies built in 1859 and was the first made  of wrought iron in Romania. We went to have a look at the 11 spired Orthodox Cathedral.

The interior is dominated by a massive gold chandelier and features neo-Byzantine decorations.

For 5RON each we were able to climb the Evangelical Cathedrals clock tower and got rewarded with some great views of the city via the four little roof turrets.

The city’s original fortifications included 39 defensive towers, five bulwarks, four gates and five artillery batteries. We saw these 2 towers linked by a walkway.

Then it was time for lunch after some research we decided to enjoy some traditional Romanian dishes at Crama Sibiul Vechi which had a wonderful atmosphere and was situated in a cellar.

I had the peasant stew with polenta

Mark enjoyed his mutton stew washed down with a local brew of course.

We returned to Bluey and travelled along the valley to the start of the famous Transfagaras Pass.

It was extremely busy near the cable car area but as we ascended and just as we came out of the tree line  Mark spotted a small lookout parking area just the size of Bluey and stopped.

View from Bluey.

Let’s hope the concrete survives until we have passed tomorrow

Too cold for a shower

The Pass will be tomorrow’s adventure. Let’s hope no bears come a visiting tonight ...we’ll keep you posted.
